Grump Central Archive: Week of 1 July 2018

Saturday, 7 July 2018

Friday started out with a wicked thunderstorm, and continued with periodic downpours throughout the day. Although it ended with a wonderful light show (above) and glimmer of hope—I must have read "a couple of weeks [until closing]" in the text from my lawyer a hundred times—five minutes later I found one of my kids isn't acting right. I'll know later today if it means another trip to the animal emergency center. I simply cannot enjoy one instant of good news without some bad news to counter it. Welcome to my life: a perpetual Kobayashi Maru test.

It's back to the waiting game with the buyers. I knew better than to get my hopes up. I sure wish they'd broken some law so I could sue their asses, but alas, everything has been (surprising as it may seem) perfectly legal. Yes, it's actually possible to ruin someone else's life without breaking any laws. Hard to believe...

Thankfully, the fourth was somewhat cooler than the previous few days, and with lower humidity. But still unpleasant. Even with no doors and windows, the house is more comfortable, owing to the large concrete foundation. It would be so nice...

Wednesday, 4 July

It was so bad yesterday that my glasses fogged up every time I went outside. When the kid's camper crept over 90, I bought some bags of ice and laid them out on the floor for them (after removing the dead branch that had dropped on the driveway, above). They seemed quite appreciative, especially Zack, who is part longhair. I hope there's some ice to be found today if it gets as hot.

When forecasters say "hazy, hot and humid," they're not kidding. At 7:00 AM, it's 79 degrees with 86% humidity. I'm awfully glad I have a lot of indoor hobbies, and a cool, dry place to enjoy them. I must also offer my sincere thanks to Steve and Ric for emotional support—it's deeply appreciated.

Monday, 2 July 2018

We've gone from winter in Boston to spring in Seattle to summer in Miami. As the heat wave continues, I'm all the more thankful I live in the woods: the daytime highs are 6-8 degrees cooler than in developed areas.

Sunday, 1 July 2018

Get ready for the heat. Dangerously high temps predicted for today and tomorrow. I'll just be hunkering down in the cabin with the AC cranked. I wish I could do something for the kids, but my temporary electric service can't support two AC units.
