Grump Central Archive: Week of 25 November 2018
Saturday, 1 December. I've done the math. Multiple times. I cannot finish the house. I'll run dry on funds before I can connect the well, install the HVAC system, purchase the appliances, or build the deck. I can finish the shell, but I can't make it habitable. The commercial property sale well and truly ruined me. So now I must begin the search for alternative funding... whatever that may look like.
Friday, 30 November. I have a roof! And windows! It's more than just awesome to see; it'll bring a tremendous sense of relief when it rains again, which it's supposed to tomorrow. Oh, and I will miss the roofers...
Thursday, 29 November. I got all but one window installed yesterday, and that's only because I had a very long lunch with friends, so that'll be fixed first thing today. And the roofers will be putting the finishing touches on the roof today. I'm kinda sad they'll be done—I've really come to enjoy their company. But the show must go on, and I've new challenges to face, made that much more challenging by the time of the year: winter is the worst season in which to do what I must.
Wednesday, 28 November. Yesterday was quite busy. The roofer came to do more of his thing, Pella delivered the last two windows they owed me, and I installed four new windows for a total of seven out of twelve. Pella also called to say they're replacing both of the big windows they screwed up in a couple of weeks—glad I'm not picking up that tab... Today I'm installing the last five windows; amazing how some things can happen so quickly.
Tuesday, 27 November. The window situation has gone from bad to worse. In addition to one of the four new Pella windows being the wrong color, one of the others isn't even square. And Lowe's finally admitted that their online ordering system is totally screwed up, which means I'm starting all over. Insert another long string of expletives here...
Monday, 26 November. Today I'm supposed to hear back from Pella about the wrong color window, and from Lowe's about the two non-existent shipments. All of these stupid setbacks, piled on top of health and other problems, have me on a downward emotional spiral. The only thing keeping me sane at the moment is my furry family.
Sunday, 25 November. The roofer made a surprise visit yesterday to get a little more work done, while the Pella crew installed the Big Four. Yes, in addition to a (nearly finished) roof, I now have (some) windows! But then came a galling discovery: after they were in place, I noticed that one of them is the wrong color! How they'll fix this is beyond me, but at least it shouldn't cost me anything. As for the Lowe's windows, it appears that some ghost in their computer system spuriously scheduled deliveries for two orders that hadn't even arrived at their store! So now I have no idea when to expect those items. Between Lowe's and Pella—the latter having failed to deliver two of the six windows as promised last week, and making one of the four the wrong color—I can't win for losing. Insert long string of expletives here...
