Season 1: Leviathan Wakes

"We look like terrorists."

As is always the case with a new show, the producers have the unenviable task of introducing not only a rather different sort of science fiction program, but one with a whole slew of characters and locations, along with a complex story having no end of plot details and twists. In light of this Herculean task, I believe they did quite well, although I'd still recommend multiple viewings to gain more familiarity with this new Universe. Thankfully, enjoyment of The Expanse does not diminish with repetition—indeed, I've lost count of how many times I've binge-watched the entire series. When I can't decide what to watch, this is my go-to source of entertainment.

SEASON SCORE:

Picking Nits: Disc 1 of the original Blu-Ray release is hardwired to force you through previews for several television shows, with no direct access to the main menu. All you can do is hit the Next Chapter button repeatedly. Really annoying.

Also, the dialog is occasionally too muffled to comprehend. Now, I hasten to add that an increasing number of television shows and motion pictures of late are plagued by the same failing, as if there's a trend among sound designers to make certain all of their hard work creating and mixing those effects is appreciated by the audience—at the expense of dialog. Anymore, I just automatically turn on subtitles.

Finally, I must get one other gripe out of the way: the show's visual designers chose to use teeny-tiny type for the opening credits, which I find difficult to read even on my fairly large television—I can just imagine that they'd be next to impossible to read on smaller devices. Sacrificing legibility for an arbitrary visual aesthetic is never a good idea, in my professional opinion. (Sorry to say, this stylistic choice is carried through in the otherwise excellent book, The Art and Making of The Expanse from Titan Books.)

Hard Media Extras: Four brief deleted scenes from the premiere episode, "Dulcinea."
