Whilst in college, I fleshed out my art alternative credits with etching. There were no rules about taking a course more than once, so I completed all of my requirements by taking the same class four times. The class was on etching, the classical type involving zinc plates, sulfuric acid, massive presses and so on. I developed some novel techniques for creating deep, deep blacks, which are challenging to produce. I also perfected masking tricks to create photographic-like shading. The art may not have been outstanding, but technically there was never anything like it before. And not since, so far as I know. Here are just a few of the many dozens of works I'd produced over four years.
