The Last Starfighter

1984, Lorimar Productions

As one of the first motion pictures to use CGI effects to depict real-life objects and scenes, as opposed to just computer displays, The Last Starfighter is not at all impressive. But you've got to start somewhere, and what better place than with a fun, lighthearted space opera, where shaky effects are easily forgiven? The silly premise was easy to swallow with such appealing actors as Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart, plus an over-the-top Robert Preston (in his last screen appearance) and Dan O'Herlihy as a huggable, good-natured alien. It didn't take home any awards, but it took home quite a few hearts from the audience.
