Kubo and the Two Strings

2016, Laika

I really wanted to like Kubo more. Yet, although it was a critical success, it was very nearly a financial failure, and I have this sense it's due to the fact that its creators were trying too hard to make something great. Kubo explores some deep philosophical themes with sublime, highly-stylized stop-motion characters, and surely this was lost on younger viewers. Not that there's anything wrong with "adult animation"; I've always felt there's too little of it. But Kubo doesn't seem to be a good fit for either audience, child or adult. Nevertheless, it's certainly deserving of much praise, and of one's time.
