Flash Gordon

1982, Starling Films et al

Count me in as a member of the large, enthusiastic cult that follows this garish, over-the-top Dino De Laurentiis drug trip. Everything about it "works" perfectly: the casting is spot-on, the performances are appropriately hammy, the sets are excessively gilded, the Queen soundtrack is awesome, and the effects are tuned to just the right level of cheesiness. In hindsight, scriptwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr. thought it was a huge mistake to make Flash Gordon a comedy, but history shows De Laurentiis' instincts proved to be right.

Gordon's alive?!
