The City of Lost Children

1995, Canal+ et al

A pan-European production (Spain, France and Germany), this singularly quirky fantasy could well be characterized as prototypically steampunk. Ron Perlman heads a large ensemble of relative unknowns, mostly French, in a stream of consciousness trip that effortlessly transitions from one curious non-sequitur to the next, maintaining one's interest with startling, unexpected visuals. Those with adventurous appetites for unusual cinematic experiences will likely appreciate it.
