300

2006, Legendary Pictures et al

To be honest, I had no clue where to put 300. It's unlike anything else. But instead of fantasy or action, it's perhaps a horror film, considering the thousands of (virtual) gallons of blood gushing from nearly every frame. Zack Snyder must really like blood. And therein lies the problem: if one has become sufficiently inured to violence and bloodletting that it feels more like a video game than a film, then 1) 300 is right up your alley, and 2) you need some time with a shrink. There's a point at which such things become excessive, and Snyder blows right past that point. But don't mistake me for someone who's overly sensitive; I'm simply at a loss as to find a way to justify this as being "art." And to even pretend it's "historic" is an insult to anyone who can read. Sin City is borderline; 300 steps way over it.

300: Rise of an Empire

2014, Legendary Pictures et al

It's more of the same, only this time with gratuitous brutal sex, just to up the ante. I'm no prude; I actually have some porn in my video collection. But there's no excuse for this. Defended by some as "stylish gore," I found it offensive; if I could push that blue arrow any further to the left, I would.
