David on Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi

Now we come to a bend in the road, as the franchise began to crack under Lucas' ever-tightening chokehold. While still an entirely enjoyable effects extravaganza, Return suffers from a lack of originality, sharing too many plot devices with the original. Then there's the clumsy, heavy-handed dialog, performances too over-the-top even for Saturday afternoon popcorn fare, and the introduction of sickeningly cute furballs taking on evil stormtroopers (here playing Keystone Cops) with all-too predictable results.

Then there's the outrageously wrong-headed move by Lucas to replace Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker in the eye-rolling revised final scene... and with that regrettable mental image, I bid you a good evening.
