David on Gravity

Thankfully not quite as self-consciously "great" as Interstellar, Gravity satisfies on many levels by virtue of taking a refreshingly different approach to filmmaking. Although some scenes and effects are a bit overdone, it's generally a skillful, engaging and worthwhile work, and stands as proof you don't need a sprawling, convoluted plot to hold one's attention. Indeed, Gravity is often riveting.

It's also remarkable that Sandra Bullock was given an opportunity to carry such a weighty responsibility (sorry, couldn't resist). She tackles the role with remarkable skill and conviction, and she's a terrific foil for George Clooney's irreverence, although I'll confess she does occasionally struggle just a wee bit in some of her solo scenes. While not one of my top five faves, Gravity still earns a top score.
